Default Indian Long Range Squadron Headdress Badge

Indian Long Range Squadron Headdress Badge

Cast brass with copper lugs and split-pin. Design of crossed lances with a tablet bearing LR. 46mm high, 26mm wide. The ILRS was formed on Christmas Day 1941 and was Ninth Army’s version of the Long Range Desert Group. Manned by British Officers and volunteers from 3 Indian Motor Brigade, the squadron comprised a headquarters and four patrols: J (Jay), M (Mohammedan), R (Rajput) and S (Sikh). It was planned that the ILRS would operate behind enemy lines in Syria, Iraq and Persia but the anticipated axis attack through the Balkans did not materialise. Finally the ILRS was deployed to patrol the Persian-Afghan-Russian border zone, ostensibly carrying out anti-smuggling operations but actually to discourage Soviet attempts to infiltrate clandestine forces to takeover this oil-rich area. Disbanded in 1947.

In very good condition and a rare “special forces” badge ----- SOLD -----
