Default Fakes to watch out for

Hi All
I see 'Old Club Badges' is now making repros of some of the rarer SA bullion badges. I hope these don't start getting palmed off as originals...

The good thing is that the badges are not all that brilliant and should not fool the more advanced collector. Sadly its the newer , keen type collector who will get caught. We all know that there are a lot of fakes around but still one likes to think that this is an unrecognised sleeper and you are going to scoop it up from under the noses of your collecting mates ( competitors !) From there its a short hop to wanting it so much that you become blinded to its obvious short-comings. Maybe there is someone else with the same mindset as you, bidding the item to an impressive number. This seems to add credence to your decision to go for this fine badge. Perhaps you 'win' the item (could never understand this- you have just paid the biggest price in any currency for something and its considered to be a 'win') .
You get the item eventually and cold realisation dawns - its a fake. You read all the fine print on the original ad and the dealer somewhere says that this is a museum quality replica.
What now ? Do you try to pass it off as the real thing or do you quietly dump it ? I leave that debate to you and your conscience.

I believe that the SAAF badge is not good. I base it on the following example that is in the collection. My one is an army version and I am sure that it is 100% genuine as it was given to me by the wearer! They should be padded for a starter.

I have some doubts
Without any references handy, the bullion and felt looks good but the badge looks very flat; were they not thickly padded? Or is it just the picture?

You are quite right Craig. All badges for colonels, brigadiers and generals were and still are padded. Have attached a few more images for interest. (The berets and cap were issued to me).

As far as I'm concerned the lion is completely wrong and that is a repro/fake.

Alex

Thanks for tge comments. The first thing that struck me was that the rods of the fasces are the wrong colour. The second is that the shape of the tip of the sword is the wrong shape. My what-I-believe-to-be genuine army general officer badge is also padded.

Hello All

Revisiting the SAAF general's bullion badge sold on BoB, here is a Chaplain General's badge that I got many years ago.

I don't have my old notes with me, so I cannot be certain but I think I picked it up in the late '80s, while I was still in the SADF, or possibly in the early '90s while doing a "camp".

Regardless, there were some variations in the badges. The lions certainly varied and I believe that some of the badges did have cotton fasces, instead of bullion.

Regards
Craig

Hi Craig
You're quite right and yours is a good one. The ones with Paul Kruger beard with no black cotton detailing are the newer repros I think.
Cheers,
Alex
