Hi all, have found a period photo of a SAAF member wearing a helmet with the flash under discussion. Photo comes from a pre WW2 publication called
"Personalities in South African Motoring and Aviation" and reads like a pre war Who,s Who. |

Hi Yes, the entry for this chap reads as follows:
'Another cadet on the strenghth of the Transvaal Air Training Squadron, is Mr James Henning Pretorius kearney who intends, in time, to adopt aviation as a career. He was born at Pretoria on 3rd April, 1913 and there educated at the Christian Brothers College. He is very interested in the construction of model aeroplanes which he regards as a hobby.
