Marine Commando c1944
I have "rescued" a couple of photo's of WW2 servicemen from some broken frames. One is a Kiwi Sgt pilot, which I will post elsewhere and the other is the one posted here.
This Marine is serving in one of the Commandos. I would imagine about the time of D Day. He is wearing the later war battledress with the exposed buttons, but it is not so late that he has a collar and tie or any medal ribbons. He is wearing a round "Combined Ops" badge below a "Commando" title below a "Royal Marines" title with number. Can anybody with better eyes than me read the number? I will post a "blow up" of the badges, which might help. It will probably be somewhere between 40 and 48. Lastly, there is something written on the back of the mounting board. I can't read the writing, but I would like to hope it that it is his name.

45 Commando
Hello,
It is probably “45”. They wore this combination of titles and Combined Operations badge and they were an embroidered set of titles rather than the “Cash’s” tape type. Photos taken just before and after D Day show this variation of the titles being worn. Regards Danny |

Thanks Danny. from the uniform and unit it looks like he would have taken part in the D Day landings
Now that we have the number all we need is his name!

This may sound a bit silly, but if you run your eyes a little out of focus what is written on the back seems to become a bit more clear. I still can't make out the name but maybe someone else can.
cheers, Michael |
