Default 3rd/9th Light Horse (South Australian Mounted Rifles)

Hello All,

I'm trying to figure out what badge was worn by the 3rd/9th Light Horse (South Australian Mounted Rifles) between it's formation in 1948 to when they received their QC hat badge in 1953/1954 or so.

I have also seen a proposed design for a KC version of the 53-60 period badge though it was never made.

My guess is that they wore a chrome rising sun badge as several other regiments did before they got there QC hat badge issued post 1953.

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Or alternatively, could they have worn a 30-42 period badge? I have seen a picture of soldiers of 2/14 QMI wear what looks like a 1930-42 period 2nd Light Horse badge in a picture from around 1952 so its possible IMHO that other regiments may have done the same.

Regards,

Mick

Sorry I can't help. But I am wondering about more of those cases. In fact I am disappointed that an expert like you has to ask. I thought you would know about all these cases

What about 2nd/14th Queensland Mounted Rifles from 1949-53?

I have more of those questions. Part of them simply because I can not find any references of the "missing" (by me) badges on the internet and thus it can be just that: they existed, but can not be found on the internet. But I will not bother you here with them, because I do not want to hijack your thread.

Hoping that you get a satisfying answer that will satisfy me also.

I wish I did know Sadly pictures/info from this post war period are hard to come by.

I suspect 3/9 SAMR wore a chrome Australian Military Forces rising sun hat badge during this period. I guess I would need to find some pictures to confirm this.

Other RAAC units (8/13 VMR, 1AR, 6NSWMR, 7/21 AH) all wore this badge during this period until they were issued with their own badges in the 1950s.

With 2/14 LH (QMI), I have seen a picture from 1952 (also posted it in another thread) of what looks like one of their troops wearing a 30-42 period badge (probably 2nd Light Horse). I have also seen design specs for a KC version of their round badge but this was never produced.

Interesting Mick.

3 LH Regt actually became 9 Motor Regt at the end of 1941 (28 Nov 41, ROs Pt 2 show date of posting as 6 Jan 42). 9/23 LH Regt was reorganized as 3 Inf Bde Recce Coy and 4MD Recce Coy on 28 Nov 41, becoming 3 and 23 Recce Coys on 8 Jan 42 and being absorbed by 3 Motor Regt in April 1942.

3 Recce Sqn is unrelated to any of these, being formed on a draft from 18 Motor Regt.

It's mostly a hypothesis until I can find some photographic evidence to support it.
