Australian 1930-42 era 1st Armoured Car Regiment badge variants
Hello All
Amongst my collection of 1930-42 era Australian badges I have three variants of the 1st Armoured Car Regiment hat badges. Two are the typical brass and oxidised versions. The third appears to have started life as a brass version but has been treated in someway and now appears to have a white metal finish. A couple of questions. Has anybody else seen one of these white metal variants? How would they have achieved the white metal finish? Any suggestions as to its origin, private commission, a special variant for a parade or ceremony, someone just playing around??? Any thoughts would be welcome. Regards Dennis

I've only ever seen brass and oxidised versions. I've never seen any white metal versions. Mick

The oxidised badge illustrated is a different maker to the others. The die difference is clearly seen at the bottom of the badge. I can check on the names of the two makers. The collar badges have slight differences also.
I do have what appears to be a WM badge which has some sort of oxidising or black paint added. I have always wondered about its authenticity. Maybe I should clean off the black and have a closer look. I have always understood that a WM badge existed.

Thanks for your comments. I have heard an explanation in regards to the two variants of the badges, one was apparently the first pattern (as in my brass), and the second pattern (as in my oxi) was suppose to have been made as a result of the first die being damaged. Whether or not this is true we shall never know, it may just be one of those badge folklore stories that starts somewhere and gains momentum. There are some copies of the 1ACR badge on the market. From the front they look very good but the back of them and their weight is a give away. I brought one a few years ago just for comparison purposes. I have attached pictures of the dud one for anyone who may be interested. Dennis
