Default Help Needed

My wife is trying to research her Grand Father in WW1. She knows that he was in a Canadian Regiment from the attached photo but cannot establish which one. I wondered if anyone would be able to identify the cap badge and let me know the name of the regiment if possible?

I just had a go at that for you mate on the basis that Canadian badges were easy. I've just learned a lesson - they're not!

Maybe I'm not so daft after all then. I had it as far as 11th Bn, Infantry, CEF.

Many thanks for this. She's researching from scratch really as there's not much information to go on. He wasn't Canadian, he was a Londoner and no-body knows how why he was in Canada.

Probably to search for a better life and to escape poverty, which was why most UK and Irish citizens emigrated to Canada, sometimes on assisted passage.

John:

Irregardless, you can access his attestation papers online through Archives & Library Canada, using his name, which will at least give you/your wife his date of enlistment, service no., and a few other bits of info.

Go here: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...es/search.aspx

If he was killed/died in service, you can also track down his graves registration info.

Finally, once you have his service no., you can get his entire service record through National Archives. This is a good summary of sources: http://www.cefresearch.ca/Links.html

David,

Thanks for these links, we'll have a good look through them now. He actually survived the war and settled in Newport, south Wales.
