Default Royal Invalids (41st Foot 1787)

Just though I'd share something I've been after for some time.
This is a button to the Royal Invalids which used that title from 1741 until 1787 when they officially started using the 41st title which they had had for some time. Hence where my interest comes in.
This is a small earth dug pewter button, but the detail is still good.

Default Irish Connection ?

Hi Kevin.
First of all may I say what an excellent item this is, and one which I am sure any collector would be glad to have.
However, I am a little puzzled by the Irish Harp, since (according to my records) the badge for the Royal Invalids from 1747 to 1831 was the rose and thistle !
Could it be that this was perhaps a regiment on the Irish Establishment which shared the same title, or was there indeed an Irish connection ?
Regards. Jeff

Parkyn page 205 - 1st Bn. titles of the Welch Regiment. 1751-1787 41st Regiment of Invalids. Unfortunately, no illustration of the button and no description from this period. More research needed to confirm the harp device so no finite opinion yet. David

Back again ! The only regiment to bear the title 'Royal Invalids' is, indeed, the one which eventually became the 41st. As to the harp device, there is nothing to indicate why although it may well have taken 'out Chelsea pensioners' from Irish regiments and reflected that on their button. For the mid 18th century, there is little documentation to confirm or deny so, on balance, I would accept that this regiment was a 41st predecessor regiment. David

Jeff & David,
The harp and crown got me looking as well, but as David points out whilst there have been other 'Invalid' regiments, there is only one 'Royal Invalids'.
I suspect that the device is linked to the Colonel's amorial arms.
Something I'm looking into.
Hwyl,
Kevin
