Default Unknown Dragon

I'd be most grateful if one of our button gurus could tell me what these buttons are please. I bought them thinking they were Aberystwyth OTC but there is no twist in the tail in the Aber example I have.
Thanks in advance.
Hwyl,
Kevin

It's certainly a possibility.

According to Howard Ripley in his article in the August 1976 MHS Bulletin.
Monmouth School was one of the contingents treated as Rifles, and in the absence of evidence to the contrary, they are assumed to have worn the universal Rifle button.

There is an article, "Badges of the Officer Training Corps", written by Ernest J. Martin in the Spring 1938 edition of The Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research. This is what he says:-

University of Wales : Aberystwyth University College.
Button. - The Welsh Dragon.

University of Wales : Bangor University College.
Button. - The Welsh Dragon [Fig. 2.]

[Fig. 2.] for Bangor shows a photo of the button of the Welsh Dragon without the loop in the tail. As you will notice the Aberystwyth button is not referenced to [Fig. 2.], so is it possible that the button with the loop in the tail is the one that was worn by Aberystwyth U.C?

Thanks, I have now had a chance to look at the old threads that cover the Aber OTC badges and buttons and the button without the coil and the almost straight out front leg is the Aberystwyth OTC button.

That given, it is then possible that this one with the coil in the tail and the downward bending front leg is either for Bangor or a previously unrecorded pattern for UCW Cardiff.

Ill post them together later for comparison.

Hwyl,

Cardiff

This one has been in my mystery draw for years, is it a Welsh OTC?

Hello Rob

I think your button is BOAC or another airline at least.

Roger

Just for the youngsters amongst us I should spell out BOAC - British Overseas Airways Corporation!

Here are the two variants together, with the Aberystwyth OTC button on the left and an example of the earlier pattern cap badge, this one with a Gaunt plaque on the back.

Yep, the first button without the loop in your photo matches the cap badge for Aberystwyth U.C., so that's my theory gone. I wonder why E. J. Martin referenced it to Bangor but not to Aber? He describes the Bangor cap badge as the cap badge of the Royal Artillery with laurel sprays replacing the motto "Ubique."
