Hello
From "Buttons of the Indian Army" by Poulsom, "Pre 1861 - Three cannon balls over garter inscribed 'Bengal Artillery'. Three cannons in centre. No rim. Gilt.". Also a variant without the three cannon balls above the garter. Goes on to specify "1861-1903 - Gun and crown [D.R.1901]". According to one internet source "All sepoy artillery units were abolished after the Indian Mutiny and the European battalions became part of the Royal Artillery. In 1862 the Bengal Artillery was absorbed into the Royal Artillery as the 16th, 19th, 24th and 25th Brigades". Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the Indian Army than me can comment on this last bit! Hope this is of some help. Regards Roger |
