Crown over Strung Bugle badge

I recently bought this I can’t find it in British Army Proficiency Badges. It is MM Lambourne Birmingham. Any ideas?

Is it collar badge sized? The lugs look rather large relative to the rest of it. A rather crude badge, but not unexpected by this maker.

I can't make out any of the letters in the naming. The light metal might argue Indian manufacture, though cast badges were more typical, and the 5th apparently had 30 battalions in WWII.

Collar badges to the 5th typically have a '5' in the space between the bugle and the crown, but at least one WWI cap badge looks like this, at least superficially. Not sure what the WWII badge was like.

It reads: Lambourne Birmingham.

But still a mystery badge.

I was initially thinking Indian Army as well, but can't come up with anything there either. I doubt Lambourne ever made anything for them anyway. The 5th Mahratta included the number in ww2 as well to my knowledge.

Closest I’ve found is this South African Mounted Rifles badge. If it is a SAMR it may well be broken.

There may be some precedence to this as Lambourne did make some Colonial badges (likely during WW1) including the Australian Rising Sun. The below pattern was worn, if what I’ve seen is correct, 1913-26 so this would tie in.

Looking at this picture if definitely looks like the SAMR titles ribbons have been removed from either side, I would definitely say this started life as a South African Mounted Rifles badge.

Interesting, I was thinking that the badge didn't look "right" somehow, the trailing ribbons just seemed strange, but couldn't think what was missing, a numeral, a scroll - I never thought of that one.
