Default Special Constabulary medal

Good evening,

I just bought these two medals. The Special Constabulary one is attributed to Arthur R. Ellis.
Is it possible to find some informations about him ?

Probably not. There were thousands of these medals issued. Police forces do not routinely keep records of persons appointed as Special Constables during the Great War or the 2nd WW nor do the Home Office.

The name is a fairly common one and unless you have the original box the the medal would have been in (giving his name and his police force) there is not a much chance of you tracking him (or details of his force) down.

Dave.

There is an annual Special Constabulary award the "Arthur Ellis Memorial Trophy" , so that could be a starting point for research.

The 1939 register shows only one Arthur R Ellis as a special constable:
Likely to be your man but not guaranteed Lots of other Arthur R Ellis's in the register, but only this one as a special.

A wireless dealer from Wem in Shropshire
"10 & 12 High Street, Wem, Wem U.D., Shropshire, England" probably a shop and flat?

Having the War Medal rather than the Defence is interesting. I wonder if he had good wireless knowledge and got himself 'enrolled'

If you have access to the British Newspaper Archive, you may, with the information you now have, be able to take your research a little further. Well done to Mike!

Just a thought for you my Great Grandad has same medal as was a special. I contacted Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire Police archives and they had the info I required, may have been lucky I don’t know.
Could be worth seeing if Shropshire Police have archives.
