.... 1970s fake. There is no photo evidence of this Arm Motto being worn. You might see it on some old unifrom sales etc ..... but they are not genuine.

Griff, is your negative comment directed at the ‘long boned’ chad, as shown, or to 17/21st Lancer arm mottos in general?

This one in particular, it is alas another of Messrs Marsh’s wares from his catalogue.

Correct Luke..... Mr Marsh 1970s.

You can also find them in silver and hallmarked.... I think the last one I saw was by Gordon Brindley..... so he obviously got hold of the die (or was given/purchased a batch of silver versions). You can find them in brass, white metal, bronzed... all sorts.

You will find them on old uniform.... because they have been put there in modern times.

Good one Griff

I repeat Griffs comments on the Chadds, anything "hallmarked " GB Is suspicious as are the "Long Boned" Chadds and the awful die cast Chadds with a rough back. Long Boned Chadds are known to exist in white metal, brass, chrome plated with a flat back plate with a hole in it and in double "Hall Marked" silver marked GB.

There is a hallmarked silver cap Motto with a GB marks on one of the sites at 100GBP but it hasn't sold the last time I looked. Just rubbish.

I have a hallmarked silver Chadd with marks for 1907.

Hi Griff

Thanks mate Ive had a look at the link and love them.

Ive now found the dodgey motto, its on British Empire Militaria No 53682, the hall marks are in the top of the skull and look to be 'GB', 925, Thistle, Castle and Z, its priced at 100GBP and looks to have a wonky left eye. have a look and see what you think.

.... its another Gordon Brindley special Phil. Now ..... yes its "winking eye" copy (old Firmin) .... BUT thats not to say that these were not worn as a private purchase item. Personally I wont collect them unless they come with good secure provenance.

....its all connected to my Regimental History as well Mac, so its a pleasure to do it

* Captain J Gibsone (17th Lancers) appointed Adjutant to the Prince Albert's Own Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry on the 18th of September 1863 until the 1st of January 1885. Made an honorary Major in 1883. Cornet John Gibsone of the 17th Lancers was listed as part of the Light Brigade in the Crimea but not listed as a participant in the charge. Gibsone was commissioned into the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons (Lancers) on the 8th of December 1854 and joined it in the Crimea on 14 July 1855. He retired as a captain in 1863. His address is listed as Gaddesby, near Melton Mowbray, in Leicestershire, in 1869. The PAOLYC and the 17th Lancers share the same detail in their mess kit waist coat and this is probably due to Captain Gibsone.
