Default Indian martingales on horse bits

A 2nd Lancers and a H.H. The Guikowars Cavalry horse bits.
I would like to find some history of the Guikowars cavalry since I have not found any.

Hi there - the 2nd (Nizam's Own) Imperial Service Lancers martingale is nice and dates from 1893 when the Regt was formed. The HH Guikowars Cavalry is quite intriguing- I think it belongs to the Baroda Princely State Forces. There is a very similar martingale shown in the "Maharajas' Paltans" book - the cypher with the scimitar above is identical - but the words in the strap are "HIS HIGHNESS'S OWN REGIMENT" - it's attributed to the 1st Infantry and is dated to 1877 > 1911. I suspect that your martingale dates from before 1886 - but its worthy of further research. Tim

It is indeed the Gaikwar of Baroda's Cavalry dating from the 1870s. Ive seen the martingale before (not this one) but not found anything on the regiment. I think it was probably part of the household or bodyguard cavalry. Nothing in Izzat or McClenaghan and Head's book either..

Not an area I klnow much about, but my bet is that any princely state units which were not taken into the Imperial State Forces scheme are virtually unresearched. Which is a shame but perhaps not surprising.

You're right Peter...Nice that some of these unknown, little-known badges have survived...the joys of this hobby/disease : )

Interestingly enough I found this horse bit a few years ago from a seller in India.
