Default Royal Engineers Metal Divers Badge

Hello this is my latest purchase a Royal Engineers Metal SW Divers badge.

Is this badge still in use and if so am I right in thinking it’s worn on the left sleeve of the dress uniform?

The Royal Engineers still wear the Diver's and Diver SW (shallow water) badges but it tends to be the cloth version and now the FAD badge. Some other units, I believe, also wear the Diver shallow water badge.
It was some times referred to as the "shark wrestler" badge.
He are mine. The cap tally is a repro. Sorry about dark picture.

Here is the other version without "SW". I believe these were designed to be worn on Warm Weather/Tropical Uniforms.

Thanks for the replies.

Did they just snap off the SW when they qualified as a deep water diver or is it a different badge?

My Badge was made by firmin is that the same with your Divers badges?

Thanks Again

John

I have had a look at my metal SW diver badge and it is made by FIRMIN. The SW would need some work to remove it as it looks like it would not just snap off.

I have sold a version where there was evidence of raw aluminium showing where the "SW" had been removed. However the version I put in post #3 was made without an "SW".

This is the RE Divers stable belt with the same insignia.

No 1, 3 & 4 are Navy I believe. No 2 not sure who would wear this, possibly a non Royal Engineer who has qualified as a Diver Shallow Water or a manufactures version ??? As you are in S.A. it maybe a Rhodesian patch?
Not one I have in my collection at this time.

The anodised divers helmet without the "SW" is a pretty scarce beast. Probaly why somebody removed the SW from their badge or was sold it as something that it wasnt.

Thank you Jerry - so you reckon nr's 1,3 and 4 is navy. Can we assume British navy ? So that green badge is still a mystery.

The badge looks like ‘piper green on black’ which are the colours worn by the Royal Irish Rangers now the Royal Irish. Not an issue item and probably not approved but could have been made for a Royal Irish soldier with diver qualifications.

Hi there, cant positively identify all of them but:

No 1. Is not Royal Navy. (and not South African, Australian or Canadian)

No 2. As already said, looks like a non issue (and probably non authorised) badge in Royal Irish colours but definitely British Army in design.

No 3. is not RN and also not South African, Australian or Canadian.

No 4. Is a standard Royal Navy issue lurex badge worn on No 1 dress by Ordinary Rate Clearance Diver (CD) or by Ships Diver, the difference being the CD's wear it on the upper arm, the ships divers wear it on the cuff.

Hope it helps

Tony
