Coloured backings, Inserts, Hackles or Plumes?
Hi All,
I am thinking about getting my collection of current Australian QC hat badges ready for framing. Aside from the black shields behind the SASR and Commandos, the dark blue squares behind the Aviation Regiments and the red insert to the RAANC badges, are there any more current badge embellishments or plumes etc? Cheers, Paul. |

Got a couple more (I think);
Sydney University Regiment - red/scarlet outline backing. Melbourne University Regiment - dark green outline backing. Cheers, Paul. |

I don't recall any of the Aviation Regiments (1st, 5th, 6th) having any backing behind their badges. They are also only worn by aircrew - ground crew wear a RAEME badge.
The only units I can think of that have any badge backing is RMC (red), SUR (red) and MUR (dark green). 10th Light Horse also continue to wear their emu tufts behind their beret badge. I don't think any other RAAC unit wears emu tufts at present - most stopped wearing them in 1990s. RAAC units also continue to wear emu plumes in their slouch hats. I also think SOER and SOLS might have black shields behind their beret badges but need to confirm. Mick

RMC = Royal Military College (Duntroon).

Yes - they do have a black shield behind the badge.
Confirmed by a mate of mine who works with SOER and SOLS soldiers. Mick

I also think that some of the reserve infantry battalions with Scottish connections might also wear a tartan square behind the badges on their glengarries.

Thanks Mick - I trawled the net trying to find even the tiniest, blurriest pic for the answer myself, but to no avail!
Cheers, Paul. |
