Both methods are used on the Smock and the Jacket, the blanking plate serves two purposes; to protect the ‘touch & close’ material, and to accommodate the badges mentioned in the above posts. However there are a number of occasions on which the badge has been applied straight to the sleeve due to operational needs, not always able to remove the badge from the plate and sew on the new one. The blanking plates also get lost or not even issued with the item, I have not found a replacement NSN yet.

A lot of badges are still available with the ‘touch and close’ material due to them being introduced for the first pattern Smock and Jacket that did not have the blanking plates.
