Hello Sarah, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is sometimes abbreviated to KP so they may be something to do with the region or local Maharaja?

Hello Sarah,
Attached is a photo of a similar style button also with KP on it. The one I have was identified by the British Button Society as unknown but a possible maybe for Malaysia due to the similarity of part of the design to the Malayan Volunteer Infantry (button shown next to it in the photo). Both my buttons are made by Firmin London. As you have pointed out it would be useful to know what the script language is on them. David. |

Just an observation....
Both Sarah and Buttonman's buttons appear to be standard brass flat blazer buttons manufactured by various button manufacturers. These have then been post manufacture 'worked on' by a skilled craftsman to change the original shape and add the engraving. I have similar blazer buttons with 'Cape Mounted Rifles' badge engraved upon it but maintaining the round shape of the button. I memory serves, I think I also have same to Rhodesia Engineers or maybe it is artillery... it has a flaming grenade engraved on the blazer button. |

Hi All,
I believe as stated above that your buttons are for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Princely State Forces. I have seen two versions of this button. See attached pictures. 1. The first like yours, a flat Gilt unusually shaped button. Dimensions : 17.4mm H x 17.5mm W Backmark : V & R BLAKEMORE . BIRMINGHAM . 2. The second, a normal round domed closed back Gilt button. Diameter : 18mm Backmark : V & R . BLAKEMORE + Ian |

There are/were no princely states or maharajas in Khyber Pakhtunwala. Period.
Khyber Pakhtunwala is the modern name of what was once largely the North West Frontier Province of British India, now in Pakistan. |
