Maker marked Hobson & sons 3-5 Lexington St

Was this unit part of the Royal Engineers?

Yes, part of Royal Engineers volunteer network responsible for port and coastal defence, amongst other things. If you 'Google' submarine miners you will find a little information about the various units.

Thankyou for the lead Roger, what an interesting unit, and one of their units was located close to me (Hull) serving the River Humber.

Although not a Button collector as such,I would certainly like one of their Helmet Plates.
