Hi
Somewhat recent acquisition in my capbadge collection. Does anyone have info to share as to why it's solid? No MM that I can see. regards Darrell

The badge was being made on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend?

Pouch badge? The lugs look longer than normal. It looks cast in the image?

Hi Phillip
Govmt contract?! Hi Bill It looks stamped but I could be wrong. There is show-thru of the obverse lettering on the back. As for the lugs; they stand no taller than other period badges but the loops are smaller. Do you know what pouch the 12th MD wore? regards Darrell

Hi Darrell, For me the lugs looked to be longer than normal, which led to the suggestion that it may have been for the pouch worn with full dress. (They had a full dress uniform with accoutrements for dragoon regiments. There would be a lot of similarity with the RCD's full dress.)
Note the badge is the corrected error type. The "I" in Manitoba was originally an "A".

Darrell,
The pouch badge is described in the same G.O. which authourizes that pattern of cap badge (G.O. 180 / 1939) Though the cap badge changed in 1939, the pouch badge had been identically described in previous G.O.'s. I have never seen a pouch badge or a waist plate as described in these documents. I am not certain, but am skeptical that they were ever made. For what it's worth, the pouch badge is (or should have been): Pouch Ornament Buffalo and mount in silver, remainder of badge in gilt.Within an annulus inscribed "MANITOBA XII DRAGOONS" ensigned with the Crown, on a stippled background, a buffalo charging, upon a mount. On the base of the annulus a trefoil. H. 2 5/8 in. W. 2 inches. |

Hi Bill
They may look longer but they stand 9mm from the back which close in length as the other period badges I have (4H=10mm, 2Dgns=9mm, KCH=9mm, Man Hrse=8mm, etc). Thanks for the description but if it is a cartouche badge then it hasn't any longer lugs. I must correct my earlier post tho', in that the loops are no smaller or larger than most of the capbadges I have. Hi Doug Thank you for that. Mine certainly doesn't conform to that G.O. description. Curious. regards Darrell
