Default Much interest in Rhodesian Badges?

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if there is much interest in Rhodesian badges?

How any of you collect them?

I might be picking up a very nice selection of over 100 odd badges (including good stuff like SAS, Selous Scouts etc) and will offer them here on the forum if there is enough interest. All 100% authentic as well.

Mick

Hi Mick,
I see that you are one of the enthusiastic contributors to the forum and deserve a reply to your question. The simple answer is , yes , there is quite a lot of interest in Rhodesian badges but this is dependent on the badges.
1) Collecting badges is very subject to the Law of diminishing returns. If you dont have a particular badge, then you will pay quite a lot to get an example. Having got one, you probably wouldnt pay very much for a second example of the same badge. Most of the badges from the UDI period are pretty common so aren't much in demand. The older badges can be quite scarce and thus more expensive ( some are very expensive ).
2) Prices on the internet can be very misleading. Even prices reached for an item on ebay might not represent the market price. All that tells you is that 2 bidders pushed a price to a certain level - they might now both have their badge and the 3rd bidder , who dropped out very early in the bidding, is now your customer. Remember , this can be a very thin market , with few potential customers. We are not dealing in Brent Crude or Kruger Rands here !
3) Have a look at my website, www.militariamarket.co.za , where I have some ( admittedly more common ) rhodesian badges . This will give you some idea as to where to pitch your prices. If you want any more help, send me some pics ( front and back) and I'll try to help with identification and pricing.
Good luck.
Mike

Instead of all the useless advice I received on what to bring with me from Zimbabwe when I left in 2004, I wish somebody had suggested bringing a heap of Rhodesian badges. The few I did bring brought a very good price on eBay, providing me with some much needed cash, and just as said in the previous post, the prices for genuine stuff have kept up.
Regards,

john
