Default Unknown Cape NCO arm badge?

Hi,

I've picked up this badge, it has the coat of arms of the Cape Colony surrounded by the British garter belt and a wreath.
Its 77mm wide by 71mm high.

Cape NCO arm badge.jpg

Not sure what it is, perhaps a NCO arm badge.
Is there perhaps a crown missing?

can anyone help to ID it.

Thanks Iain

Hi Iain
Don't know, but it looks like it might be the centre piece of a helmet plate?
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Iain,

I think Alex is most probably right, as your badge appears to be identical to the centre piece of a QVC H/P in Colin Owen's book No.141 - Cape Volunteer Staff Corps, bi/m helmet plate worn prior to 1902. Of course there is the possibility that is could also be a glengarry/cap badge of the Cape Volunteer Staff Corps. The fittings on the back should provide a clue here.

Best regards,

Zob.

Hi Alex, Zob,

I dont have Owen's book, I really must get it if I am also collecting SA badges!

Thank you both for the feedback; Do you not think its too large at 77 x 71mm to be a Glengarry or cap badge?

Fittings on the back are 3 loops.

best regards,

Iain

Hi Alex,
If your loops are North, West and East then that suggests to me: Helmet Plate Centre. Have a look at "norfolk regt man's" - "Photos of this type of badge wanted please" on the Albums page 3, this should give you a good comparison for the type of loops used on this type of centre plate.
Best regards,
Zob.

Evening Iain

Give Traist a shout I think he may still have a copy of Owen's book going.

Cheers

Hi Zob,

the loops are west, east & south and there's no centre loop as in "Norfolk regt man's" album.

best regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Even with the alternative arrangement of the fittings, coupled with the fact that there is no centre loop., as long as the style of loops correspond with those already mentioned then you are still most probably looking at a HP centre. If you get the opportunity to get your hands on a copy of Owen's then have a shufty at No 141 which illustrates and describes your "centre piece" perfectly, depicting the attached wreath as is the case of your badge - albeit affixed to a helmet plate backing.

Best regards,

Zob.

Hi Iain
I wouldn't worry that the fittings on your badges aren't N, W & E with a central one. The SA badges didn't usually have fittings like that and I don't recall ever having seen one with that style.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi, I have the helmet plate and have checked, I do think that it is the centre. Can you post a picture of the back? Regards Andrew
