Default RAF. RFC. RNAS - All in one photo.

Thought I would just post for general interest the latest addition to my postcard collection.

This photo was probably taken at RFC/RAF Haldon around April 1918 and visible in the photo can be seen what appears to be several band members wearing the first RAF Cap badge, several others still in RFC uniform and standing in the back row (4th from left) a member of the RNAS, as his cap has a black shiny peak and what appears to be a cloth cap badge of a crown above a circle in which is an anchor.

Peter4447:

Having just done another scan I am tempted to think the badges in the peaked caps are RFC not RAF - sorry chaps!

As the chap with the shiny peak looks to be in khaki, he could be in early RAF uniform with a cloth capbadge. Are you sure it shows an anchor? The guilding metal/brass RAF badge came into use just post WWI. Regards, Paul.

The RNAS badge was round in shape and dark blue with a red anchor. It looks RNAS to me and I have not seen a RAF badge that is shaped the same, or with that colouration. I used to have some RNAS photos but sadly have lost them.

Hi Peter J
Thanks for posting the one of Harry Allingham. Whilst my photo is blurred and fuzzy it is indeed the same badge.
Regards
Peter

I was thinking of the junior ranks -Airman 1918 badge as shown in this linked page. Regards, Paul. http://rafweb.org/Badges1A.htm Also on this page. http://www.britairforce.com/raf_capbadges_1.htm Just a thought as a possibility.
Picture from the Great War Forum that shows the badge in use with early RAF Khaki uniform.

Yes, I see what you mean Paul, they do look the same. It could well be that badge in the photo if it was taken a reasonable time after the RAF were formed. If the men are almost all RFC then I guess it must be an RNAS man.

I picked this up the other day as part of a complete page from a family album. I imagine it's the Royal Naval Division we all seek so much as the badges go.

Great picture Longshanks.
I have often wondered what those lads must have thought having joined the Royal Navy to go to sea only to find themselves in the trenches.

Yeah, like ending up a "Bevin Boy" in WW2, down a coal mine for the duration.

Default longshanks RND picture

Great picture longshanks, i understand quite a few of the rnd members that
had served prewar at sea with the royal navy were able to transfer from the
rnd back to service at sea on board ships as many of them didnt take to life as soldiers on land.

Yes, It was a surprise when I got it, as I bought the page from the album for the regular infantry pics I have in my photo's album. I intend to scan and re-touch them all to get rid of the crease's and crack's in the original.

I'll post them when done. Glad you liked the pic.

Regards

Simon.
