request for a quick reply: 2 helmets WWII
Attached are pictures of two donations to a local archive. They had been in his shed for all these years.
They were presented by a man who had picked them up as a boy. The German helmet came from a German compound where he played as a boy. The origin of the British helmet is unknown. May I ask for an identification and if possible a value for insurance purposes. Both helmets will be retained and used for educational purposes. I have access to the helmets for another hour or so. Thanks in advance |

The British helmet is a MKII dated to 1943 and is worth about £30-60, made by RO & Co....Rubery Owen & Co Ltd Darlaston, the liner should also have a makers mark, size and date on it.
The German helmet is a M35, hard to tell the maker without detail shots of the markings on the skirt and it might have been repainted post war as the paint looks a funny shiny green colour, worth £100-200 if repainted and a bit more if it is the original camo paint job.

The German helmet has markings 47 and T62. It also has scratched initials H.V. We think it has been repainted. Probably it has been played with by the 2nd owner. |

I have not been able to find any markings on the British liner. Can you tell me where to look for them?

On the cross pieces of the liner cradle. Easiest to show you on this damaged example from my collection. You will have to gently pull the liner out to see them.

47 is the lot number, but I would expect it to be a 3 digit number, the other is the maker and size, 62 being the shell size in CM's whilst the T should be ET for the maker which is Eisenhüttenwerke in Thale.

A nice period German WW2 type M35 I think, original liner but the green paint is a later addition the colour inside the shell would have been the same out side at one time,
there are two simple ways of dating it, the fold over pins holding the liner to the shell (their are three)are usually dated and secondly the metal liner band has a makers stamp and date pressed into it under the leather next to the chin strap buckle. The other marks stamped in to the shell of the helmet are maker marks and helmet size. take a look http://www.german-helmets.com/HELMET...20MARKINGS.htm worth a little time and work to remove the post war paint a nice found. Stephen Collecting to Stone Staffordshire and surrounding Towns and Villages. In particular the whereabouts of my Great Uncles medals 14 Star Trio 1st Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment to 9605 Pte H Taylor known to be serving with A Coy 1915 also his brother location of his British War and Victory to 12125 Pte W.J Taylor serving with 5th Batt R.F. 1915. I have his 14/15 Star. |

The archive has closed now, but I did notice a vague F or E. ET 62 it is. I'll ask for the 47 number to be investigated. Same for the lining numbers. I'll also request a search for an emblem under the paint. Can you help me out: is it supposed to be above the right ear? By the way the first presentation of the two helmets was a success. The archivist passed the helmets to the schoolchildren during his presentation. You can guess what happened. Next time he'll do that afterwards ... Thank you very much for all your efforts, much obliged. |

The emblem would be a decal and depending on which service it was issued to it would be different, but in general they are always in the same place on the sides, sometimes on both side and sometimes just on one only. Here are some I used to own to show the location.

Isn't £30-60 a bit much for a Mk II, especially in that condition? I'd have reckoned that £20-40 was a better range...
The chinstrap is from a late or post-war helmet, not the original one (with "spring") that would have looked liked this one: http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/milita...met-inside.jpg BP

The shell is dated 1943 so a late war chinstrap is acceptable I think.
