Default Thistle/lion

I would appreciate it if someone would tell me where I might find out what these are.

The first one has the motto of the Order of the Thistle on it. I believe that several Scottish badges had that motto. Is this a military badge? The only similar one that I have found seemed to have been a badge that went with the order. The badge is 45mm high and 40mm wide.

The second badge, with the lion and the crown, is 45mm high and 35mm wide. Is this one military? I found a reasonably similar looking badge with the lion on an Edwardian crown that was listed as N Z Permanent Staff. Is that what this is? Does the different crown give a clue to its age? It looks as though it had two lugs on the reverse at one time that were nipped off. One has been replaced.

Hi Donny,

The first one is to the Scots Guards, the second, sorry, I'm not sure.

Dave.

Thanks Dave. It seems a lot smaller than most of the other Scottish badges that I have. Because you did not suggest otherwise can I presume that it is an alright badge?

As said the Scot's Guards is the first badge and I think the second is a generic type of 'pouch badge', as used by several regiments that did not have a distinct 'special' badge of their own.

The crown and lion badge was also worn as a cavalry arm badge by both the Royal Horse Guards and the 15th Hussars and from the size you have quoted it might well be one of those.
