Chris,
Direct comparison with a J.R.GAUNT B'HAM version.

To me they look identical apart from the maker marking.

There is nothing in the London Gazette on Beewyse except for the company mentioned in my first thread and repeated in Phil2M's thread.

It means the Beewyse clothing name may have been a brand name.
I doubt if a firm could supply badges to the MOD using a brand name.

The supply of badges and buttons to Middle Eastern countries may indicate a Pakistani supplier using this name.

[QUOTE=grey_green_acorn;491699]I have found that the Wessex Wyvern badge was also worn by the Army Cadet Force in the 1970s. Also more recently and briefly by the Royal Wessex Yeomanry?

The Royal Wessex Yeomanry and their cadets wore the RAC badge when there was the shortage of the yeomanry ones. I have not heard of the Wessex Regt badge being used.

I saw a security guard with the Wessex badge on his cap a few years ago, in Newbury. Regards, Paul.

I did wonder about the Wessex Yeomanry?

Wessex Wyvern cap and collar badges were also worn by Exeter University Officers Training Corps ?

Yes both EUOTC and SUOTC wore the Wessex Regiment cap badge on their re-raising in the 1980s before their own cap badges were made.

I have not seen anything that the Yeomanry ever wore the infantry cap badge. They wore the old Yeo regt as Sqn badgesthen the black plastic badge.

Alan, thanks.
My conclusion so far is that the Wessex Wyvern badge in gold anodised was worn for at least 34 years (1958-1992) by units of the Regular Army, Territorial Army, University OTC, Army Cadet Force and a civilian military style band which is still wearing it! Also seen worn by a security guard in Newbury!

However, so far, I seem to have the only one that is maker marked BEEWYSE LONDON

There was at least one CCF who also wore it. From memory it was Sherborne.

Hi Tim,

Reverse die looks same - see flaw on plinth about quarter the way in from the left.

Obverse die is different -see extra 'toe' on the BEEWYSE example above 'E' in WESSEX. Also, the scales on the upper right the wyvern tail 'loop' are different.

Still, maybe Gaunt had multiple obverse dies and were commissioned to make a run of these badgesforthem with their name on.

Regards,

Chris

Examples of the Gaunt examples i have. All very similar but not the same. The Officers badges have similar rear characteristics.
