Default Hussars Tunic Pre 1900? Identification

Can anyone offer assistance as to the identity of this Hussars Tunic. I was told it is British, possibly post 1850 & pre 1900.

It certainly has all of the characteristics of a hussar pelisse due to the fur edging and cuffs. The scarlet color indicates either a yeomanry unit or possibly a trumpeter as British hussars have traditionally worn a blue dolman and pelisse with different color facings.

Hope this is helpful,

I am not convinced its a military jacket.

looks more like a livery uniform of a servant, such as footman.

I think it is an Hussar Pelisse, but probably French, not British.

CB, I had the same thoughts as the French 4th Hussars wore a red/scarlet pelisse, and many other countries had hussar regiments that wore a red/scarlet pelisse. By 1870 the style of hussar dress had changed considerably and started adopting the style that he British Hussars wore a style similar to that worn by German Hussars up through at least WW1.

Might be able to tell more if we could see the inside.

I have a French 8th Hussar costume, probably used for operas or stage plays, but it is nowhere near the quality of this one.

Imp, Thanks for the inside of the pelisse. Makes me feel comfortable that is is not a stage prop, as there is no label and looks nothing like e inside of the stage prop one I have.

Love the various repairs, which makes me think it was well worn in the field. I just thought, but it could well be a trumpeters pelisse for the French 9th Hussars too, as they wore a scarlet pelisse.

Nice piece for sure!!!

Terry
