Tyneside Scottish Brass Economy
Can anyone give a verdict on this brass economy version of Tyneside Scottish ?
Were there ever any economy made for the Tyneside Scottish? This version is not voided at the thistles. Which suspects me to think its a dud anyway. Comments please . |

Described in Col. Wood's 'The Fifth Fusiliers and Its Badges' as being in white metal for soldiers (Wood 448) and in silver or silver plate for officers (Wood 447) There's no mention of 'economy' versions in brass. Perhaps there was a shortage of white metal in Eastern Europe a couple of years ago.
Dud, I'm afraid. |

A restrike. As mentioned it should not be in brass. Also there should be two voids between the cross and thistles.

Luke H, Interesting that he states originals had both loops and steel pin !

Those are my notes from my album. The MM catalogues are just scans of badges and reference numbers.

If you are going to buy an example, look for the big distinctive steel pin, as shown in post four.

Luke,
Interesting to see that the top points of the Saltire have been rounded. I have a very similar example with attribution to a man who served in 20th Bn NF (1st TS). I wonder if it was a widespread practice? Regards Mark |

Mark,
Yes I’ve seen it done on several badges and it seems a fairly common practice. In fact I bought the badge pictured so I had such an example. Believe this pic I found on Twitter shows a ‘trimmed’ TS being worn on the glengarry. Regards, Luke |

This badge quite succinctly highlights the dangers of true restrikes.
Note it has the correct voiding. Aside from the reverse detail being not the best if it was aged up I feel it would be all too convincing were it not for the ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ stamped into the upper right cross arm. I’ve not seen one like this before but would imagine it’s from the 1970s like the similarly marked tapering sliders and plaques that are occasionally seen. |

This is the one to look for with the steel pin brooch fitting.
