Default New Ebay Payment Methods

ebay UK is rolling out its new card payment system. No longer will you be funneled through paypal to make a payment but will have the option to pay by card direct if you wish, if the seller permits it. Could have some major ramifications for paypal?

I'm curious what the take up will be? I wonder if sellers will eventually be able to drop paypal as an option?

The big disadvantage to paying direct with a card is that as a buyer you lose the 'paypal' second line of defence if something goes wrong. I had an issue once with a purchase* which ebay with its 'money back guarantee' rejected. Went to paypal and got my money back.

*Bought £400 worth of medals from a French seller and received the shipping box lid only!

The 2 disputes I’ve ever raised on eBay it was apparent that PayPal and eBay were very much at odds with each other as each claimed it was the others responsibility so I’m not too surprised with this more tangible split.

Re this point I wonder if the next step will be where sellers en masse turn off the PayPal payment option to escape their fees and thereby force the use of card.

You could still get another second line of protection using a credit card but again those often come cost implications and not all buyers are eligible or even have one.

Be interesting if they make paypal payments non-compulsory for sellers. If there is a financial incentive for ebay to do so then they will drop paypal. All depends on the fee levels between the two and if eBay can skim a percent

Wasn't PayPal owned by Ebay until fairly recently ? As a seller, I DETEST the new and improved "Managed Payments" system. I used to enjoy building up a good sum of money in PayPal and withdrawing it to the bank when I chose to do so. Now Ebay process the payments and pay small sums when they decide to - these payments usually take several days from the sale of the item and will mean (frequently) that the buyer will have the item before the seller receives the payment. Seems like (yet another) erosion of sellers rights (I still find it unbelievable that a buyer cannot leave negative feedback against a non paying timewasting bidder !)

Just my thoughts

Call me cynical but eBay are not doing this for the benefit of buyers or sellers , they are doing it for money !

"For buyers , managed payments offer a range of payment methods , such as credit and debit cards , Google Pay and PayPal. Ebay intends to offer Apple Pay as a payment method on iPhone and iPad."

Someone is going to have to pay for the service and it won't be eBay , no doubt they will offer a good deal to begin with but once they squeeze out the 'opposition' (PayPal) they can/will increase their fees.

As a buyer , PayPal works for me both on eBay and here on the forum.

I've had that option here in the states, but don't use it. Mainly because the fee my card uses is higher than Papal for currency exchange and I buy at least 75% form the UK.

The new ‘managed payments’ system is compulsory for business sellers, and quite frankly, it stinks.
I, and all other sellers I have consulted with are dead st against it, but they have us over a barrel if we want to use their selling platform.

As a buyer paypal is convenient.

As a seller, they are a major pain to deal with to the point where some businesses that I know of have stopped offering paypal as a payment method.

PayPal is massive and still owned by eBay but it is listed of course. It's a serious money maker so I doubt eBay will want to get rid of it.
'After the existing eBay-PayPal agreement ends in 2020, PayPal will remain a payment option for shoppers on eBay, but it won’t be prominently featured ahead of debit and credit card options as it is today. PayPal will cease to process card payments for eBay at that time.'

Thumbs down

Today , for the first time , I came across an eBay listing that was using the new 'managed payments' system.

"Buy It Now" > Payment Page (PayPal is my 'preferred option') > Click 'Pay by PayPal' > Pop Up opens and you have to log on to your PayPal account and go through their normal procedure > Click pay now > Pop up closes and your are back on eBay.

So , rather than simplifying things the 'new' system adds a couple of extra steps.

Default eBay Royal Mail tracking and delivery events

eBay have also introduced Royal Mail tracking and delivery events on eBay from 1st Sep 2020

eBay is adding a unique eBay code to orders to improve buyers post-transaction experience by making it easier for them to see any available tracking and delivery confirmation* for the parcel’s journey.

This code doesn’t impact the delivery of your parcels. The code will only be added to items posted using eligible Royal Mail UK services and where there is sufficient room on the order address to do so. In the future, this may extend to services provided by other carriers.

The unique eBay code will be included at the end of address line 2 in the eBay order and through a matching process, eBay will use this code to obtain available tracking numbers from Royal Mail.

The unique code will be in the format ebay1234abc ('ebay' + 7 alphanumeric characters) and for the majority of customers, when you generate your Royal Mail address label, it will automatically be transferred from the address into the 2D barcode on your postage label. The unique eBay code will not be printed as part of the address on the postage label.

*Only tracking and event data visible on the Royal Mail web site will be shared with eBay and only eligible services will have tracking and event data provided. For certain services, tracking and event data will only be made available after an item has been delivered.

See the full detail on your selling page under ‘selling announcements’

More VAT coming for imports to the UK, collected by ebay, VAT for sales collected by ebay if you sell to EU, Limits dropped. All-in-all much more taxation - yeah!

I noticed if you sell something to a foreign buyer, and their country has one of the new vat collecting arrangements with ebay (that will be everywhere very soon by the looks of things)- then if the fee is collected by paypal you actually pay the paypal fee on the vat charge. Now isn't that nice. You pay the fee on the financial gain of some other entity.

Changes to VAT treatment of imports into the UK
From 1 January 2021, the UK will introduce a new model for imports to ensure goods from outside of the UK are treated in the same way as goods already in the UK.

The changes at a glance

The current VAT exemption for imports of goods in small consignment of a value of up to £15 into the UK will be abolished.
eBay will collect and remit VAT on consignments up to a value of £135 imported into the UK and sold to consumers.
In cases where the seller is a non-UK business and the goods are already in the UK, eBay will collect and remit VAT for supplies of goods sold to consumers within the UK.
If the buyer is a UK VAT registered business and provides their valid UK VAT registration number, the responsibility to account for VAT will switch to the UK VAT registered business customer.
All sellers will have to provide a gross price and separate VAT rate on their UK listings, so that eBay can determine the correct amount of VAT to collect from consumers.
All prices will be displayed inclusive of UK VAT. Where eBay is responsible for collecting VAT, this amount will also be shown separately at checkout.

Changes to EU VAT for cross-border e-commerce
From 1 July 2021, the EU will introduce significant changes to how VAT is collected on imports into the EU, supplies within the EU by non-EU sellers and cross border supplies by EU sellers.

The changes at a glance

The current VAT exemption for imports of goods in small consignment of a value of up to €22 into the EU will be abolished.
eBay will collect and remit VAT for imports of consignments up to a value of €150 shipped into the EU and sold to consumers.
For goods where the seller is a non-EU business but the goods are already within the EU, eBay will collect and remit VAT on sales to consumers within EU countries, and from one EU country to another.
The current distance selling thresholds for intra-EU cross-border supplies will be abolished.
All sellers will have to provide a gross price and separate VAT rate on their listings, so that eBay can determine the correct amount of VAT to collect from consumers.
EU sellers with an annual turnover of more than €10,000 for their complete intra-EU cross-border supplies will have to charge the VAT of the EU country of delivery.
As eBay is preparing for these changes, cross-border trade sellers should also assess the impact on their business and prepare for the changes. Please contact your tax adviser for questions on your VAT obligations.
