No 4 ID please.
Can anyone place this tiny No 4 in space and time for me? Even approximately? The lug is pretty distinctive. Actual '4' is approx 10 x 8 mm (H x W). Many thanks, Mike

It looks like a British Red Cross detachment identification mumeral.
These were worn on the shoulder strap, in combination, between the 'RED CROSS' upper title and the lower 'County' title. They are usually found in ones, twos or threes,, depending on the number of the detachment; odd-numbered detachments were male and even-numbered were female. They were worn from WWi through to thr early 1960s,, when cloth replaced metal. George Last edited by conservator; 13-09-21 at 08:28 AM. Reason: Addition. |

Examples of brass backing plates for shoulder titles - RED CROSS above county title with numerals in between.
