Question Help in identifying old medals please.

Knowing that I'm interested in military history a friend of mine asked me to try and identify medals that had been awarded to a member of his family. I haven't a clue where to start, can anyone help from the photograph I've been given? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

British Empire Medal, the stars all bear their names, and WWII War Medal.

Edit - I forgot to say the lapel badge is for the old Northumberland Union of Mineworkers.

I'm surprised that there's no Defence Medal with the group.

Information re. the medals is available on various websites including this one:

Those on the bar are miniature medals, which were for wearing on Mess Dress or civilian Evening Dress.

If you get the recipients name there are places on the internet that you can look up his or her details.

I would assume that this is a Royal Naval group given that there is no Defence Medal present. It is unusual to get a WW2 Naval Group with a Defence Medal....

It is one of those quirks of British Medals that the Defence Medal was only awarded for 6 months overseas service in territories subjected to air attack. Therefore as many ships were not under air attack many seamen didn't get the Defence Medal. The same applies to the vast majority of Prisoners of War and RAF Casualties......Guy Gibson didn't even get a Defence Medal!

The award criteria for WWII stars and medals confuse me, what with all the 3 years service or 12 months service or 6 months service depending on certain factors or automatic qualification if wounded or killedt. And the ammendments to criteria.

There should be a notice in the London Gazette for the award of the British Empire Medal.

Default Hello

Due to no Defence Medal I would think Merchant Navy. Can you tell us the details / naming around the rim of the BEM?

The full size BEM is in the box below the miniatures.
