Hi All,

Tim's interesting VTC albums have prompted me to post these two badges. The bi-metal one looks OK. What about the all gilding metal one?

Thanks, Tinto

Tinto,

It's never simple, which is perhaps why we do what we do!?

I've seen a few of the bi-metal ones, of varying quality, and - to be honest - I don't know! What I do know is: The picture in K&K, 1646, is a Gaunt badge; the blobs(?) on the saltire are very square, like pyramids, and the coat of arms is small; the helmet atop the shield is shaped. Both elements of your badge differ in some way, so if it is genuine it is (probably) not a Gaunt, but another maker. Deejayuu pictures the same badge in a "WW1 Volunteer Training Corps" in this section, and calls it doubtful. The construction is a little crude, although closer to the Gaunt construction than the modern copies, but the round blobs feature on all copies I have seen. I look forward to the opinions of other members...

The all guilt is the first I've seen! The coat of arms on this is the one usually seen on copies; it is larger, and there is a rather squarer helmet form. So, I'd put it in the extremely doubtful category! That said, I have a couple of these versions in bi-metal which I've attached, one of which has good patina and very precise detailing in the coat of arms compared with modern copies. I retain an absurdly optimistic "maybe..." Once again, I look forward to what the other members offer...

Best regards, Tim

Hi Tim & Tinto, Thought I'd add mine to this, you can see the pyramid like detail & the overlay on mine has 2 flat brass loops with a brass pin to fix it. Lugs have been repaired on this but still a nice badge. All the best,
Wilf.

Default Bi metal

Hi, I have the same badge in bi-metal but it has a slider, not fixing lugs. It's not marked but shows age and wear.

Without seeing the reverse, it looks to be the genuine article to me. Any chance of a look at the back?

If that is the Glengarry it is pictured on in your photo, then it should be all black (as seen below).

Looks like a good one to me, the star ray stipples (for want of a better word) are small pyramids rather than the circular ones found on repros. The badge ought to have a Gaunt plate also and be constructed of two parts.

Whilst the majority of genuine examples I have ever seen have had the Gaunt plate (as Keith says), I have also seen genuine examples without, as with the example in post #4, above.
