It is my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, that the "Royal" title was granted on 31 January 1936 to the Australian Corps of Engineers.

I have never seen a GVI Royal Australian Engineers or Edward VIII for that matter, although the latter being more understandable. Are there examples of GVI "Royal" Australian Engineer cap badges?

Thanks,

Drew

The permanent engineers received their 'Royal' in 1908, the Militia engineers in 1936.

I don't think we moved fast enough here to have any Edward VIII badges. The George VI badge was introduced in 1939 according to Festberg and Cossum.

The Permanent Force engineers had 'ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS' on the circlet on their hat and collar badges, presumably after 1908, and up until 1922.

The engineers did not adopt the RE type of hat badge until 1930 and as far as I can see from the works by Festberg and Cossum (I'm not an engineer collector, just artillery), the scroll read AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS for both permanent and militia from 1930 until 1942 in both GV and GVI versions.

Between 1922 and 1930 the 'rising sun' General Service badge was worn by the engineers, as well as the rest of the Australian Army.
