Default The Lowland Regiment

Whilst going through some of my saved images of restrikes/fakes/repros I came upon theses images which I thought might help members who may be looking for a real one.

They show a genuine Lowland Regiment badge on the left and a fake on the right. As you can see the fake is slightly smaller. Unfortunately the rear image is slightly out of focus but hopefully still useful. Note the position of the fixing loops. I don't have the fake anymore, but I can measure the dimensions of the genuine one if anyone is interested.

I have also included an image of the genuine badge on its tartan swatch.

The majority of Lowland Regiment badges seen on various online auction sites are fakes and I do believe this stops people looking for a real one. Hence when they do appear they are often overlooked and can go for very low prices for what in reality is a rare-ish WWII badge.

Mark I've had a fake smaller size with the four lugs in the past, so four lugs not always a good sign.
Hope you dont mind I've used one of your images to show the indicators I use to spot a fake.
The outer points of the saltire on copies have a small radius. Also on a genuine example some of the letters 'bleed' into the title surround.
Tony.

I am one of those people. This is a badge (among some others) that I am missing as I have never been sure about it.
This post will be of some help however!

Smile Lowland Regt

Back in the early seventies I went to a local antique fair and someone had a pile of these badges with four loops, I bought one and wished I'd bought more, but they were not cheap and I only could afford the one.

Well gents hopefully I've been of some help today instead of just getting under my wife's feet.

Thanks Tony for the comment on the loops. I'm struggling to recall but I may have seen 4 loops on a fake Highland Regiment too.

Using Tony's advice it is quite easy to get your eye in. Looking for the curve/radius in the line on the arms of the saltire that he has kindly circled is the easiest method to spot a fake if going through a lot of listings quickly. Then if it's needed confirm with the lettering.

Wonderful scientific detail and forensic analysis gentlemen. Right up my street.

To confirm, yes there are fakes with 4 loops.

Paul - hopefully this demonstrates. Left = bad. Right = good.

Hi Paul
If you look at the first image as an example, there is an oblong channel on each arm of the saltire that mimics the shape of the arm. On fakes if you look closely you will see a curve on the corner of the channel, whereas on a genuine badge the channel corners are a true angle.

As the photo has some light pollution the curve is better seen on the bottom two arms.

Got it?

Cheers
Mark

Correct.

Badge making is a technological process with only so many ways it can be done. By understanding those manufacturing processes and origins of a particular badge it’s possible in many cases to reach high level of assurance relating to its authenticity.

Nice one David, bet you were shocked you didnt get 'Sniped' at the last second, as is usual by a 'dealer'.
Then to find it at a much inflated price on their sales list a week later.
Well done Tony.
