Default United Empire lapel badge/brooch

Hi Members,
Attached is a lapel badge for your interest. I am fascinated at the amount of detail on it. It measures 30mm (approx.1.25'') in diameter.
On back is "SYMBOL OF EMPIRE" "Regd.No.643272" "WHITE LTD. MANCHESTER".
Cheers,
Tinto

Hello Tinto
An interesting badge!

The bulldog featured is Dimboola as owned by Queen Victoria and painted by Maud Earl under the title "What we have we'll hold".

As the British Empire was being eroded by external forces a myriad of political organisations came into being trying to hold the status quo.Such as the British Empire Union and others who would eventually come under the scrutiny of British Military Intelligence.

Lots of these organisations produced badges many of which have never been
listed or researched so you never know!

Cheers

Dave

Hello Dave,
Thanks for the interesting details. Nice to know it's Queen Victoria's Dimboola, quite a change from the present day corgis.

Hi Tinto,

My project is the Empire to Commonwealth Project and I wonder if you would/could send me the image of the badge for me to put on the site, please?

If you are OK about this, my email is here and if you email me with your name, I will of course be pleased to acknowledge its source.

Many thanks,

+ Anthony

Hi Tinto,

THANK YOU for the image! I'm now trying to figure out which animal it is on the left - the bird .... and what country it represents - also the elephant, is that African or Indian!

Thanks,

+ Anthony

Anthony,
the elephant is Indian(small ears),the bird is a little tricky as it could be any one of several options......Emu (Australian, though we already have a Kangaroo for them) Ostrich (Africa, but not a great match/image) Moa (New Zealand ,long extinct)Kiwi (NZ again, but that should be short, fat & long beaked)Kotuku/White Crane (NZ once more) I suspect it may be meant to be one of the NZ birds .
Cheers !
Steve (NZ)

Hi All,
I agree with Steve. My feeling is that a moa represents New Zealand in this case. The moa features on other badges about this time.
Cheers, Tinto

Default King's Colonials

When I saw the animal emblems on this badge they reminded me of the squadron badges of the King's Colonials formed in 1901.
A Sqn -British Asian - Indian elephant
B Sqn British American - beaver
C Sqn Australasian - kangaroo
D Sqn British African - ostrich

C Sqn was split in 1902 into Australian & New Zealand Sqns with a change in badges to kangaroo & fern leaf.

Potted history
1st King Edward's Horse (King's Overseas Dominions Rgt) 1901-24
1901 4th County of London IY (King's Colonials)>
1905 King's Colonials Imperial Yeomanry>
1910 King Edward's Horse (King's Overseas Dominions Rgt)>
1914 1st King Edward's Horse>1924 disbanded

Although the enamal badge shows Queen Victoria's bulldog, it has a king's crown. Therefore dates it possibly to about 1901-02 when the King's Colonials were fighting in South Africa.

What do you think? Possible?
Alan.

Hi Alan,
Good reasoning.
An ostrich for South Africa is a definite possibility. It's just that the bird seems taller and hasn't the characteristic shape of an ostrich.

Good one, Neil,
That is the definitive answer alright. The bird is an ostrich representing South Africa.
Thanks,
Tinto

Default Solved

Well that article from the Australian War Memorial seems to resolve a lot of things-I was part right with the ostrich but way out on the time period.

The armed forces of New Zealand must have been more than a bit put out about their large contribution being missed out on this badge. New Zealand had dominion status from 1907, so they should have been on there.

We should start a thread on the best & worst animal & bird images on badges. This ostrich/emu/moa certainly would be up there.
What about that funny cat on the Ontario Rgt badge!!

I'm very glad we found the answer,
Alan
