Default MAKERS MARKS AND A PERIOD OF PRODUCTION.

Hi gents, I have a quick question that I saw mentioned in a totally different thread but wanted to ask it to keep a note. Can makers marks and the type of badge they are on put it in a period of production.
Like, a Rifle Brigade with a Marples & Beasley B'ham on the slider. Does this put it for example post 45 or maybe pre 1914.

Would love to know, and add it to my rough notes on this type of thing.

Thanks
Simon.

Rifle Brigade badges are easier to date by the battle honours.

Thanks Keith, this one has by the looks of it all of them with the Prince Consorts own at the bottom. I have this one already, but I like the fact it has a makers mark on the slider.

Thanks again

Simon.

Sorry but M&B did not mark ORs badges. I would need to see yours to form an opinion on it but I have never ever seen a genuine M&B ORs badge.

Has this makers mark been faked then on some badges?

No I am afraid I don't buy fakes but they pop up on ebay now and then. I went to the Charing cross fair a few years ago and there were boxes of bright shiny fakes with several fantasy marks for sale.

Apologies, Alan. I did not intend to imply that you might unwittingly buy fakes.

All the best,

Peter.

Oh none taken at all. I do keep the odd photo of fakes for reference but I don't think I have one for this badge.

I'm afraid I have managed to unwittingly acquire the odd wrong 'un or two along the way - don't expect there can be many of us who haven't.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi gents,

there is an example of a M&B fake KC Para badge in this thread.

Thanks for the link, Ry - interesting thread too. Did the Para badge in question remain in your collection?

Cheers,

PJ

Hi Peter,

Thanks, yes the badge is still in my collection.

Although I have it on the highest authority that this badge was not a genuine M&B badge and therefore not an issue item. I have had the opinion of a respected dealer that it could have been purchased privately as a copy and then worn in service.
The badge does show signs of wear and has bags of character, so if not a worn example it is a very good and convicing fake for those (including myself at the time of purchase) who would not know better.

Regards

Ry

Ry,

When all's said and done then, seems as though the whole experience turned out to be a very positive learning curve. Plus, you have a badge you like, even if it's provenance is still somewhat unclear.

Cheers.
