Reynolds & Westwood Chads (17 Lancers)
Hi All
Two different chads from the same maker a year apart. The later looking very Firmin like.

Amazing how the two are so different and so close in age.
Thanks, cheers, Alex |

....I am not surprised as the first one was not very attractive. Maybe the feedback was not great and they changed to the more "in vogue" Both genuine though. Probably a private purchase and at the cheaper end as they are both hollow and back plated?

Chads
Both have brooch fittings which I presume are original, why not loops or was this the type offered for private purchase?

Arm mottos
Hi All
Firstly these are not really Chadds the nick name came in WWII after the comic figure much later were the Arm motto had a more rounded look. There are two main types the Firmin one which is rather Gothic and another that is more in keeping with the more modern one. Looks like This company had a go at both . I was only saying to Rob yesterday the one that Lancer17 (bless Him) now gone had picked one up from this company. They were often pin broached because of expense on having them on all the uniforms. They also caused less damage then putting holes in for loops. Best Mac |

...different makers would have made batches and HMd them not necessarily in the same year of production. I doubt makers made them every year as there would have been no need? The breather holes are a feature on nearly all the hollow back plated NCO arm badges.

Arm mottos
I also have a white metal variant the same as the 1894 but it has one large hole on the back plate.

17L arm badge (Motto)
Could these be described as ‘long boned’ arm mottos as opposed to the more recent (relatively) ‘short boned’ version?

..... I think R&W did their version of the "Pimm" chad first and then did the Firmin style.
You can see the early Pimm with the rest of the styles here :- https://www.paoyeomanry.org.uk/Motto/NCOArmMotto.htm UPDATE:- The 1894 sold for £730 Feb 2022 on evilbay.
