Default Victorian period buttons

Hi,
I have posted a belt of old buttons into "All Albums" for your interest. The matt finish ones were worn during the New Zealand Land Wars.

Hi Tinto, That is indeed a very nice selection of Victorian buttons. We do not see them come up that often in South Africa anymore. Regards Andrew

Default Victorian period buttons

Hi Traist, and David,
Thanks for your comments. If only the buttons could speak, they would have many a tale to tell. Note that there is a 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment among them. As it is not mentioned in Howard Ripley's book, is it a rare button?

Some I do not know. For example, the two at extreme right of 4th part - VC over a bird on tawse, laurel leaf surround.
Any ideas?

Cheers,
Tinto

Tinto,
The 75th regiment button is in Ripley's second book, Buttons of the Regular Army 1855-2000. It is button #205, and Ripley just states:
75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot
Gilt & Brass, 1855-81
I suspect it would be more rare since it was not in his first book.

As for the others, I do not see them in Ripley's second book, nor in his books on Rifle Volunteers & Yeomanry. I wish I had his book on Militia so I could check there too. Wonder if they could they be Livery buttons?

David

Hi David,
Thank you for checking the 75th Foot in Howard Ripley's second book.
I thought that maybe the bird buttons could be Livery.
Cheers,
Tinto

Default Foot regiment buttons

Hi,
victorianbuttons4 - last column:
top: Liverpool Police, pre 1901
bottom: a livery button

It is a very nice lot indeed.
Would you kindly supply a separate scan of the first button of Victorianbuttons1?

regards,
btns

Hi btns,
Thank you for identifying the Liverpool Police button, and the Livery button. I thought it might have been a Liver bird but it's different from say, the Liverpool Pals hatbadge.
Here is the one you wanted, a 51st, different from the one in Ripley's first edition book. It is a thin button compared with the others.
Cheers,
Tinto

Default 51st button

Tinto,
Thank you for the image. As it is thin and silver plated I think it is a mess waiter's button. It is a nice button (and so are the onther buttons on this belt)
best regards,
btns

Thanks, btns, for identifying the 51st button. I should have mentioned it is concave in shape.
