Default LRDG Officer Slide

Prospective buyers beware of this fake on eBay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LRDG-OFFIC...sAAOSw4CFYqaOw

A fake brass LRDG title fitted to a captain rank slide for the purpose of deception.

Take a look at the other fakes he is peddling...

For the purposes of information - What makes you think it is fake?

Default I would love to know

Reproduction / fake badges is one of my favourite topics so I too would really like to know what's wrong with this title

Is that example original?
The IWM do sometimes display items that would be regarded by many as suspect?

Regarding the title in the IWM collection. It is difficult to tell if original or not without an image of the back. When I last visited the IWM they had a fake LRDG cap badge attached to an "Arab" headdress on display...

I see the item in question has ended with no bids.

So would I but I daresay some of those who fake such items watch posts such as these very closely and I can understand any reluctance to tell a wider audience exactly what is wrong with a fake such as this one. No doubt the fakers would soon pick up on their errors, correct them and then be peddling even harder to recognise fakes!

Roger

PS The listing was ended by the seller today "because the item was lost or broken" after bids had been placed. "Lost or broken" is one of the few reasons ebay allow a seller to end a listing, so it is not necessarily literally true! No doubt the seller reads this Forum!

Default Passing on knowledge

I believe that you cannot publish how to spot a fake without telling a faker how to correct the fault, this has happened to a degree with the dud Volunteer and Territorial Force Artillery badges which now seem to appear with one of the faults corrected, there are fortunately other faults.

The LRDG experts are a fickle lot, some share their information and some don’t, and others share as long as the information given is not passed on.

To me LRDG shoulder titles are a very mixed bag when it comes to understanding what is good and what is bad. The first official insignia worn by the LRDG was a shoulder title with the red letters ‘LRDG’ on a navy blue to black cloth background.

The brass LRDG shoulder titles fortunately are much easier to understand as compared to their cloth counterparts they are much less common and can be divided into just two types.
The first type is what is commonly referred to as the Egyptian sand cast LRDG shoulder title, the second type is the die stamped LRDG shoulder title made by ‘J R Gaunt’ who especially made 50 pairs for LRDG veterans who participated in the Victory Parade in London.

Basically brass LRDG shoulder titles are rare and without provenance should be treated with the greatest of caution for those who do not have pictures of 100% pukka LRDG badges to compare with.

From memory but could be wrong, if I recall ‘Omok1’ who is a forum member, has both versions of brass LRDG shoulder titles that were obtained from LRDG veterans. Maybe if he sees this he will post the fronts of his brass LRDG badges.
