Hi Jim
I will leave the British buttons for the UK fellows to identify. but in the second picture, bottom row you have the Canada Militia of 1885-1901. next button is the same period just different style or striking, then you have the same Militia except the period is 1904-24. Last frame you have the 13th of course then The Veterans Guard of 1941-45,The Canadian Scottish 1948-52, Ld Stratcona's horse of 1912-68, RCASC or Service Corps of 1946-52then the 18th bn as Bill says I believe raised by the Essex Fusiliers ,right Bill? The Victorain Crowned Militia buttons are often sought out.
A really great reference book on Cdn Buttons is by Smylie. I don't think I have any copies left but Blair Ferguson might on Ebay ( Ensignferguson).

- Okay enough fun, back to lugging boxes!

Hi there,

With regards to the Britsih buttons.

The Buttons on the first sheet are, from left to right:
Top row:
Royal Regiment of Artillery (KC)
Royal Regiment of Artillery Volunteers (QVC) - because it is white metal
Honourable Artillery Company (sorry can't make out the crown)

Bottom Row:
Corps of Military Police & Military Provost Staff Corps (King George V)
Royal Regiment of Artillery (looks to be a 'ball' type button)
Indian Army (King Edward) - I think, as the when it was King George the cypher read "GRI".

Cheers

Ian

I have been struggling with the portcullis & horn button. Can you tell me what the back marks (i.e. maker's marks) are please.
My first thoughts are that it may not be military (or least British/Empire etc.) as the horn (bugle) is facing the wrong way (i.e. left to right) whereas all the buttons featuring horns that I can think of, have the horn/bugle facing right to left. (This is where I am shot down in flames with 50 examples of such buttons!).
So it could be a Livery button. I will keep looking through my books.

Cheers

Ian

Ian,
The same design portcullis/bugle horn button has previously been on this or another Forum and I cannot for the life of me remember who wore it .

Hi Jim,

Success at last!! (Hopefully)

On the following website for the dealer "Goldenage buttons"

http://www.goldenagebuttons.co.uk/li...0Societies.htm

Under the "Clubs and Societies" section

Badminton Club (1874 on). Hunting horn below chained portcullis
Brass, two-piece convex, 25 mm. £2.50

A quick bit of investigation and the following comes out.
The Portcullis is the family arms of the Beaufort family who own Badminton House (i.e. Badminton Horse Trials etc.). They have something called the Portcullis club.
http://www.badminton-horse.co.uk/200...club_2009.aspx

Now I may be adding 2 and 2 and getting 5 but it does look to all fit. (famous last words!)

So hopefully all identified.

(N.B. Goldenage Buttons also do military buttons as well. I have ordered some buttons from them in the past and I received a very good service. Please Note: I am not related to them in any other way other than having bought buttons from them).

Cheers

Ian
