Default 21st Officer Cadet Battalion - 1st World War

Having managed to obtain a genuine Household Brigade OCB badge,

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...sehold+brigade

I thought the chances of getting the Cap Badge of the only other OCB to have their own badge (Although I believe an unofficial/Privately procured item?) was pretty slim. Shock, Horror

I managed it though and not long after obtaining the other.

I am happy that it is the genuine article, not sure about the faded cloth backing which came with it?

Measuring 40 x 38mm, in White metal with two nice brazed lug fittings.

Images move to this Album!

Andy

A very nice badge.

John Bodsworth " British uniforms and Equipment of the Great War 1914-18" Vol 1. mentions a couple of other badges worn by OCB`s

Hi Andy

This is fantastic. Never seen this before. Having read your previous post, I was also interested to see the OCB shoulder title. Another new one one me. It has to be said though that new ones always seem to appear!

Which specific OCB is this please? XX1 obviously, but....

Also, I'd be fascinated to know what the other badges are..... any info PB?

Cheers, Neil

Peter,
I only have Gaylor, K&K and Cox which only give reference to two.. Could you perhaps list some details or send an image of the extract via e-mail?

Neil,
all I know is that it is the 21st OCB. Information on OCBs as a whole seems scarce!

John Bodsworth Lists 21 OCB`s plus what is called Garrison OCB at Jesus College Cambridge.

There is also an article by Jake Whitehouse in the circular of the West Midlands Branch of the MHS dated October 2004 called "Officers Training" in which he also lists the OCB``s

The 21 st OCB was based at Crookham Aldershot.

Jake shows an officer cadet wearing the battalion numerals ( Shoulder title ) 2/OCB on the white band on his cap.

J.B. says " Officers wore standard pattern officers service dress............Initially no special insignia was authorised with some units wearing their battalion numerals in their caps or on their shoulders "

Coloured numerals were approved for wear on the white cap band-yellow for cavalry and scarlet for infantry.

John illustrates a number of officer cadets wearing the numerals and what he describes as " an officer cadet of 10 OCB wearing the special cap badge of that unit which appears to be an "X" but it is not possible to see if it is a cloth item or a metal one.

Keith,

They are, I presume, what are referred to as battalion numerals in John Bodsworths book ( and what we now call shoulder titles ? )

I suppose that anything that was worn on a cap has a place in a collection of headdress badges.

That's one of them Peter. The framed collection had quite a few Sandhurst, etc badges in it. A browse of the DNW site will list them all.

Thanks to Wilf.

This is what the "hobby" is all about, there is always something coming to light not previously commonly known.
