Did B&P and J&Co make ORs badges?
Hi All
One for the Boffs ....... Serious question :- Did B&P and J&Co make ORs badges? If they didnt ..... is there any evidence of either Company sub contracting their dies out to let let other companies make the "volume" product? Yes.... its a loaded question.... with some back up for the 17th Lancers..... and I believe Julian can make a case for the "Kings"?

I think Jennens did make a lot of shako and helmet plates, but, with B&P are you talking about Bent and Parker or Bodhill and Parker, the latter made many rankers badges.

Yes I know that Bodmill & Parker & Co certainly made OR badges - I have a Lpl Pals badge (1917 Pattern) stamped B&P Co Ltd.
The Bent & Parker appear to have been do so also - their books (in the TNA) lists exactly how many badges for x badges. The useful album from Paul Spellman suggests a number of manufacturers produced OR badges - included J&Co !? Gaunt certainly took over J&Co and produced officer's badges (often 'Gaunt late J&Co') on officers badges but a close examination suggests that they (G) used J&Co dies too. J&Co after Gaunt took them over did produce OR badges and I have no doubt that the dies were in continual use after that point in time.
However with the possible exception of a 20th hussars badge, which I put down to all the gilt worn off I have never seen a J&Co stamped badge that was not an officers. |

....You can say the same for Bent & Parker.

There are 7th Hussars OSDs from the same die as all GM 1916 issue badges, the latter of which often exhibit 2 die flaws on the first E of QUEEN’S v’s none of a single flaw on the OSD.
Given that B&P made officers badges and they are also shown on Julian’s 1916 tender document as providing pricing for 2,000 7th QOH in all GM I’ve always wondered if it was perhaps by them using their OSD die and damaging it in the process of making OR badges. Purely anecdotal and speculation on my part however. Doubt we will ever know. |

..... apart from the slightly different angle the photo was taken..... there is no difference between these two for example (other than the male die).
The Silver would have been hand finished etc. I have a clear photo of the white metal being worn in the Great War era
