Default Are these for real?

First, I've never heard of the ATS wearing blue uniforms?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-...sAAOSwvPdgW5Jj

Second, Not like any Rutland HG badge I've ever seen, or in any of my books?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RUTLAND-H...97.m4902.l9144

Both might be good, but if so, new to me.

Terry

Photo from a 1944 newspaper article :

The ATS have their own Hospital Blue's row - attractive battle dress style blouses and skirts in blue flannel serge. The first of the uniforms are being worn at a Chestis Military Hospital. ;October 1944.

Edit : I think the caption/story was a misprint and should have read Chester Military Hospital.

Also found this from IWM :

"BLOUSE, BATTLEDRESS, CONVALESCENTS' (HOSPITAL BLUE) (SP 1945): O/RS, ATS"

Described as "'Hospital Blues' were worn by both male and female military personnel when recovering from wounds or illnesses sustatained in service. "

But I am not sure that is accurate , why would they need/want to wear 'battledress' in a specific colour rather than their own uniform ?

I could see the uniform being worn to distinguish staff working specifically in a hospital environment/capacity.

I wonder if there has been confusion between "Hospital Blues Uniform WW1" which was worn by patients in Military or Convalescence Hospitals during World War One.

https://www.qaranc.co.uk/Army-Hospit...niform-WW1.php

And the 'uniform' introduced for ATS 'hospital' staff in 1944 ?

All very interesting. Thanks all! I knew of blue being the hospital dress for WWI, but did not know about WW2. Seems surprising to me that they would make it a BD style rather than a pajama style.

What puzzles me is that the IWM link states that they "were worn by both male and female military personnel " and there is also a "SKIRTS, HOSPITAL, A.T.S." but why ?

Why just for A.T.S. ? Were there no other "female military personnel" in the hospitals "recovering from wounds or illnesses" ?

Also , as these 'uniforms' were introduced in 1944/1945 would there really have been sufficient numbers of A.T.S. patients/wounded in hospitals to justify the design/manufacture/cost of a new uniform specifically for them ?

Mike, You must know that the British Army does strange things! When I was released from Catterick Military Hospital in 1959 after a bout of Chicken Pox, the Doctor who released me handed me a package from their stores. They had destroyed all my “next to skin” clothing and in the package was all the necessaries including a white shirt and a bright red tie. I asked if I shouldn’t have a blue shirt and black tie, He said No, that is Army dress for wear on convalescence from an army hospital. You may well imagine the explosion I got at the guard room when I returned to RAF Catterick! D.J.

I do remember that at the latter stage of WW2 and just after, in Aldershot, all patients of the two local military hospitals [Cambridge and Louise Margaret], those who were permitted leave to go into the town, did wear mid blue trousers. Their regimental/corps battledress blouse or tunic also worn This identified them as patients to both civilians and Military Police. As I recall, all nurses I saw, wore their standard uniforms
