Default Commando flashes

I think they are post WW II. Cash company of England made two batches on woven rayon. The first was in the spring of 1944, and the tapes were about 5/8" wide and dark blue. The second run was in late 1945 or early 1946 and the tapes were a slightly lighter shade of blue and 1/2" wide. From the picture you supplied your appear not to be made of woven rayon but melton. Your type was used right up to the 1960s.

Default Royal Marines Commando -titles

These titles were certainly not in use in the 60s. I was issued mine [curved] ROYAL MARINES COMMANDO in 1957 at CSRM Bickleigh, I have oppos who joined before me 1953 and 1954 who wore the same. I joined 42 then we linked up with 40 and 45 in Malta and Bde HQ was just down the road, everyone wore the curved pattern with Bde sign beneath.

The Cash's tape title ROYAL MARINES was worn without COMMANDO subtitle by probationary 2Lts RM undergoing training at ITCRM Lympstone in early 1964. And presumably by other non-Commando trained RM ranks in those days when BD was still worn.

My Father was in 45 Commando in 1947 to 1961 and he wore these cash tapes initially (with no 45 number). Later he was issued with the curved woven Royal Marines Commando Titles.

I have only seen this Cash type in 5/8''. Attached pic shows R S Chiverall, 40 Commando, with what appears to be a Cash type 'Commando' on his service dress. As he was KiA at Salerno the initial Cash order must have been before September 1943. Also note he has no crown above the RM badge on his beret.

Default Cash's RM Titles

I think that the image demonstrates colour and size difference. Upper (Post-War) is 17.5mm and the lower (World War 2) is 14mm. I say this because I've got over a dozen of the larger size Royal Marines and only one smaller size Commando.

Hi Mike,
In my opinion the smaller tape is post war and the larger is WW2. I say that because I was issued the smaller type in the late 70's and I have picked up a 1943 group and the size of all the tape Royal Marines/Commando are the larger type. If all yours are the larger type then you struck it lucky!

Regards
Irv
PS the group came with a 1943 dated beret and he was de-mobbed after the war.
