Default H.M.N.Z Transports

I am trying to ascertain the circumstances and era of the lapel badge here illustrated.

It is bronze gilt. Obverse bears the Kings Crown in centre with the leged H.M.N.Z. Tranports. The reverse bears makers 'C.M. Bay'.

Presumably the badge was issued for service to personnel (Merchant Navy ?) who served on the troopships conveying New Zealand troops overseas in the World Wars.

Was the badge worn in uniform ? If so does anyone have a picture to share. Also was the badge worn in one or both World Wars?

Any information will be appreciated.

Yours aye,
Mark

Hi Mark,
As you have surmised, this badge was worn during the First World War, on a mufti jacket lapel, by those serving on the troopships.
I'm not sure whether it was worn in the Second World War, I have been trying to find some information but no luck so far.
Cheers, Tinto

Hello Tinto,

Thanks for confirming the badge is from the Great War era.

Yours aye,
Mark

Are the makers marks 'C.M. Bay' those of a NZ manufacturer, and is the maker known / identified ?

Yours aye,
Mark

Hi Mark,
"C. M. Bay" badgemakers also made the New Zealand Returned Services Association (RSA) badges so I presume they were based in New Zealand. Sorry, I do not know where their premises were.
Cheers, Tinto

C M Bay were a well known Wellington manufacturer who produced badges during and after WW1.
I have their exact address but will have to go thru my files to find it, but from memory I think it was 54? Lambton Quay Wellington.

C.M Bay is Cecil Montague BAY.

He made badges of all sorts and persuasions and was a very skilled engraver. He also made a presenation greenstone, gold and silver "casket" containing a gold badge for the Returned Soldiers Association presented to the Prince of Wales in 1920.

The comment amde by a surviving relative was that every member of the workshop contributed in some way the casket. Wonder where that is?

Back to your Transport badge: they may well have been used in WW2 but you will notice the similarity to the 1914 Admiralty pattern. I believe that there was a version in enamel that many say was for "officers".

Hello

I am interested to find out some more on the gifts that were presented to the Prince on his tour. I haven’t been able to find much at all about them.

You mention a casket presented to the prince of Wales - is that something you gleaned from a book, news paper article, a list of gifts, family knowledge etc?
