I doubt it would be Royal Naval Division, although I can see where you are coming from.

Starting point ?

"The coronet of an earl shows five "pearls" raised on tall spikes, alternating with four strawberry leaves."

Sorry Dave, Royal Naval Division, RND. Its only a guess as the hood battalion has a bird something similar to this one.

Are you thinking of Viscount Hood who gave his name to the Hood battalion?

Indeed, and it is almost certainly a livery badge but I can see the original poster's line of reasoning. Please see Baronet Hood's button.

Not the same bird, IMHO - the stance of the what is meant to be a Cornish Chough in Viscount Hood's livery, judging by the example, is quite different from what appears here. It appears to be 'overt', which is the avian version of 'statant' [standing]. An example of the Hood Battalion cap badge is attached.

I can't find a term for the head up pose though 'vigilant' is applied to birds too.

Peter,

I am not saying that it is the same bird. I am suggesting that if someone, with a limited knowledge of heraldry and livery badges, found the badge in the first post, I can see why they might make a (spurious) connection with the Hood Battalion.

I am also worried that we might be deterring new members from asking questions if we don't let them 'think out loud' when they post.

Simon.

Its a livery badge for a British Earl.. its a falcon on a "torse" (the Earls Crest) on the Earls coronet.

Having spent an hour going through my 1857 copy of Burke's Peerage, the closest match that I can find is Thomas Knox, Earl of Ranfurly, whose crest is described thus: A Falcon perched, ppr. See the Knox button. https://sites.google.com/site/livery...ied/home/birds

There may of course have been other Earldoms created since 1857 that would fit the bill.

This is the right collar badge of the New Zealand 8th (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles. Formed 17 March 1911 served during WW1 as part of the Canterbury Mounted Rifle Regiment. Refer https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/phot...rbury-squadron

Cheers

John
