Found a bit more information about the origin of the "Two-minute silence".

Default Ernest J Martin's Article

Mike,

Alan O has posted EJM's article already; Go to 'All Albums', search on "VTC" and it should be top of the list.

Thanks, Alan!

Best regards,

Tim

Thanks for the heads up , I managed to read the article on-line but it is great to have it available here for members to peruse.

So , it proves that there was a 'British Legion' before 1921 but can't find any details yet.

Edit : I posted about this before but it got lost when the forum was 'resurrected' .

Exclamation And then there was four !

Saw an ad on eBay :
"The British Legion. A rare original article from the Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine 1837".

No details about the article but after a bit of digging I found a downloadable e-book on Google for the magazine. Turns out the article (9 pages) was about 'The British Auxiliary Legion, also called the British Legion or Westminster Legion' and dealt with the First Carlist War in Spain.

So no help in my research about the 'other' British Legions but it does show that within a period of 90 years there were four 'organisations' using the same name.

1835-1837 : Carlist War ,Spain.

1860-1861 : "Garibaldi Excursionists" , Italy.

1914 - ? : WW1 home front volunteers.

1921- Present : The British Legion/Royal British Legion we all know.

I'm still curious why in 1921 they would choose a name with such a chequered history ?
