Jonathan,

Of course it is, I should have checked in there first. I picked up my reference out of Wilkinson-Latham.

Incidentally, my copy of the History is 177, what's yours.

Hwyl,
Kevin

Kevin.

No 121 or 126 presented to SM Bandsman Monk in 1899.

Also the 2nd button (if it small version about 15mm or smaller) is a gaiter button.

What happened to the replies? They appear to have been deleted. I thought we were discussing 41st buttons

In the meantime I'd like to share the attached image of a silver or silvered large 27mm Mess Staff button to the 41st. Backmark is 'Firmin & Sons Ld. 153 Strand London'. The inclusion of the 'Ld.' assigns a date commencing from 1876. May I ask if this design was changed after 1881 or if it continued in use in the Mess as a numbered regiment.

I think that you will find that the button remained in use without change after 1881, and right through until mess livery was no longer used.

I’ve just picked up some buttons to add to this thread. First up is this rather nice Officers’s pattern fire gilt example for 1813 to 1831. No makers mark.
The second set of photos show what I believe to be gaiter buttons for ORs from the period directly prior to the above and dating from the war of 1812, although I don’t know the significance of the variation in size at the moment. I understand Parkyn refers to them but I don’t have a copy. Soon to be rectified.

Superb photos Kevin, thank you for posting. The star of the Order of the Garter was used by a surprising number of regiments, but I did not know that the 41st was among them until now.

This is the earlier pattern Officer’s button to the last one. This one dating from the same time as the gaiter buttons shown earlier. Originally with a silver plated finish. Both sizes with maker marks to the rear for I. McGowen, London
