I believe that it is a Rifle Volunteers badge from the 1860's - 1870's for the 90th ?????RVC. Officers quality and worn on the shako as well as the glengarry cap.

From memory only Lancashire, Lanarkshire and Middlesex got that high.

The rear fittings are non standard and I feel they have been added at a slightly later stage .

regards

90th Lancashire RVC existed from 1868 and was disbanded in1870.

90th Lanarkshire RVC existed from 1860 and became part of the 5th Lanarskshire RVC the same year.

There was no 90th Middlesex RVC (the 50th was the highest numbered).

No other counties reached up to 90.

And, because some RCVs showed the precedence number of their county: 90 is the precedence number of Nairnshire, which only had one RVC
1st Nainshire RVC existed from 1860 and was disbanded in 1862.

So far about the RVC facts. All of them short living units. And when the badge belongs to one of them, I would say difficult to prove and rather rare.

Thank you all, for your knowledgeable replies.

This is an example where known provenance is so important in identification.

Cheers, Tinto
