Default Societey of Ancient Mariners. What do I have ?

Have searched the internet but cant find anything. The gilt and enamel badge is made in 925 silver and maker marked S.A.M.
It has Society of Ancient Mariners. First Sea Lord on the reverse.

Thank you.

Graham

By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,
Now whyfore asketh thou me?

Sorry, Graham . . . couldn't resist . . .

My RAN and RN ships' plaques have the same crown.

Just as a note. The SAM mint mark stands for South African Mint and was adopted c.1941 to replace the RMP mark (Royal Mint Pretoria). the .925 is the silver proof mark used in South Africa. So there is probably a South African connection to this brooch. Google searches also shows connection of the society to Australia, Canada, etc.

Here is a link to look at regarding the society:

Thanks for the replies. This badge did indeed come in a small lot brought back from S.Africa by a coin dealer some years ago.
After reading the link the society seems to be international and certainly has a sense of humour.

Thank you.

Graham.

Hi Graham
I've never seen this before but I can hazard a guess. The Seven Seas club in Simon's Town, which used to be the Naval Officer's club but is now open to many people, has a policy whereby once you reach a certain age you are classified as an ancient mariner and have free membership for life. I suspect this may be an early emblem for one of those senior members.
Cheers,
Alex
